Formed in Minneapolis, MN in the summer of 1997, Self-Evident have
since developed and begun to apply a unique, positive, and smart
formula to standard rock songwriting, conjuring music that is very
resistant to categorization.
Variously described as punk, indie, emo, post, math, and art-rock,
self-evident are perhaps more aptly dubbed “transcendental”,
encompassing all of these styles and more; often within a single
three minute song.
Somewhat sparse vocals serve to compliment and bring structure
to instrumental parts. Influences run the gamut, some notable ones
include Fugazi, Shudder To Think, Rush, Faraquet, Casket Lottery,
The Dismemberment Plan, and Don Caballero.
Self-Evident have played over 450 shows in over a dozen states,
including such venues as The Quest, Gabe’s Oasis, 7th St Entry,
Triple Rock, and The Empty Bottle. We’ve played with countless
local and national bands such as Don Cabellero, Juno, Chokebore,
Align, Bad Wizard, Traindodge, Riddle of Steel, Bearclaw, Slackjaw,
Nymb, Murder in the Red Barn, Overstep, Houston, and The Vida Blue.
In February of 2000, after recording two short run EPs, Self-Evident
released their first full length CD, “What We Sound Like”,
on Lexington, NY’s Doom Nibbler Records. The band subsequently
organized a brief week long tour to promote the album. In July of
2002, we joined up with Minneapolis’s Blue Worm records and
re-released the “Direct EP” and followed it up with
a two week US tour. The full length “Angular” was released
by BWR in June of 2003 and included a month long tour to promote
the album.
Our forthcoming third full length, “Epistemology”,
will be released on Oct 4th, 2005 by Minneapolis label, doubleplusgood
records.
